For many children served by CLiF, school is where the books are. When summer begins, that access disappears, and so does daily reading. Without regular practice, hard-earned literacy skills can quickly slip away, leaving kids at a disadvantage when they return to school. Over time, those losses add up: by high school, summer learning loss can account for up to two-thirds of the reading achievement gap.
Access is key. Research shows that reading just a few self-selected books over the summer can reduce or prevent learning loss. CLiF’s Summer Readers program provides that access by bringing new, high-interest books directly to kids at camps, libraries, and community programs across Vermont and New Hampshire, where they can choose the books they want to keep.
Because when kids choose what they read, they read.
