Community Literacy Grant

Bringing Books and Storytelling Beyond the Classroom

The Community Literacy Grant partners with community-based programs and early childhood centers to expand access to literacy outside of the classroom. Through inspiring storytelling events, on-site libraries, family literacy programming, and book giveaways, the grant creates welcoming, literacy-rich environments for children and caregivers.

Activities and Support

Each Community Literacy Grant partnership includes:

An interactive storytelling presentation led by a CLiF presenter that celebrates the joy of reading

A book giveaway, allowing every participating child to select two brand-new books to keep

An on-site children’s library to increase ongoing access to high-quality books

An optional parent and caregiver event focused on the importance of reading aloud, with practical strategies for supporting children’s literacy—especially for adults who may have limited literacy skills or are not fluent English speakers

People browsing a table filled with colorful books in a modern library setting.

  • Out-of-school time programs, including afterschool and vacation programs for school-age children

  • Childcare centers and preschools, such as Head Start programs and early learning centers serving CLiF’s target population

  • Community centers and service providers that support low-income families, foster children, teen parents, refugees, and other under-resourced communities

  • Camp Exclamation Point (CAMP!), a nonprofit partner serving children of migrant workers in New Hampshire and Vermont through a free, weeklong summer camp

  • ELL classrooms and refugee programs, supporting children and families from diverse linguistic backgrounds by increasing access to English-language books and strengthening literacy skills
